TRUSTS AND ESTATES

The structuring of an estate plan involves some of the most personal and financially significant decisions a person will ever make. The elimination or reduction of estate taxes is often a central goal, although tax considerations should never displace the crafting of a crisp and sensible dispositive scheme.

Our estate planning clients frequently face serious tax issues. Their estate and family dynamics often present challenges which are unique. We help our clients define their objectives and lay out for them the options available to meet those objectives. We then assist them in choosing and implementing the plan which best suits their needs. When designing estate plans, we focus upon minimizing, and whenever possible, eliminating prospective estate and generation skipping taxes. Our planning, implemented through wills, trusts, and related documents, often involves a blend of lifetime transfers of property and dispositions at death.

Many of our estate planning clients own family businesses. Frequently one of their objectives is to transfer a business to the next generation without costly taxes or disruptive disputes. For these clients, we design and implement business succession plans.

We also provide legal and administrative services for probated estates and trusts. In addition, we represent clients who wish to invoke Washington State’s TEDRA procedures to modify the terms of trust or other arrangements that have become problematic for family members.
